Should the monarchy still exist?

With the recent passing of the Queen, the monarchy is at the forefront of everyone’s minds.  However, this raises a question: Should the monarchy exist?

Well, for starters, the monarchy seems to have a clear bias wherein only those born or married into it may be a part of it. This is unfair to the general population of the country the monarchy is ruling over, as they have no choice in who runs the country.

Another problem with the monarchy is that it gives people who may not deserve power because they were born into it. Someone who is a bad person could get into power, and this would be “right” as the monarchy works. This is even more unfair to citizens of that country because they now have to deal with a terrible ruler who they may not have voted for if given the chance.

Additionally, if someone who is good isn’t in power, then their influence is lesser than the in-power monarch. There’s the possibility that the good efforts of the better person may be silenced or stopped simply because of the power imbalance.

That’s not to say that the good person should hold the power at all, of course. Just a few good apples in a barrel of spoiled ones would get taken down with the whole thing, but can still be salvaged and enjoyed despite it. Then again, a barrel of rotten apples with a few good ones may reveal that the “good ones” were rotten on the inside.

Clearly, this situation requires a lot more nuance than a short article can deliver, and I haven’t even scratched the surface of this sort of thing, but consider; if you can’t vote for your government heads, would it be a good government?
