I’ve always wanted to play multiple sports and other activities. I believe that I don’t belong to just one cliche. I want to do a mix of everything, but a problem I’ve had when trying new sports is being thrown in clueless with no help to improve.
It’s like your first day at a new school; you don’t know anyone or where to go. School sports tryouts are drills and practices that only returners and experienced players know.
Of course, they have an advantage over everyone else, but the drills should be taught in more detail. I think there should be special training for inexperienced players and for them to have an equal chance.
The team returners are 99% guaranteed to be on the team again while a newcomer has little to none. I think it’s unfair that students who want to try a new sport have no way to get training that would benefit them when trying out for a sport they’ve never played before.
If you weren’t put into a sport when you were young, there’s no way for you to get into it and have the same experience and time. Sometimes it isn’t possible for a student to play something due to health, family, or financial issues.
Playing a sport or joining an activity like theatre or band can also be mentally challenging. Personally, I feel like an outcast in new territory and find it quite embarrassing. You can’t help but feel intimidated because a majority of the team has played since they were 5 or 6.
It’s difficult to feel confident when it’s obvious you don’t have a chance. To accommodate new players in a more effective way there should be training sessions with the coach available for direct advice. Practicing with the coach without the pressure of previous team members could help build confidence and also give them a preview of what it would be like on the team.
