“Pretty in Pink” is fairly ugly

Of all the movies directed by John Hughes, “Pretty in Pink” is the weakest.

The film has morals that are good, but the acting falls flat, and ultimately, it is just a boring film. Even Hughes recognized the issues in the film and tried to fix them in “Some Kind of Wonderful,” which came out the following year.

“Pretty in Pink” tells the story of Andie Walsh, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks that falls for preppy rich kid Blane, played by Andrew McCarthy. Walsh, portrayed by Molly Ringwald is poor and an outcast in school; her only friend is the quirky, eccentric Duckie, played by Jon Cryer.

When Blaine and Andie start seeing each other, the popular kids led by Steff (James Spader) start to be rude to both of them and end up almost destroying the relationship.

The film is the worst of the Hughes teen films and the worst acting by Ringwald. Cryer is not funny but annoying and bland. Like Jake Ryan in “Sixteen Candles,” Blaine is boring, bland, and he barley talks in the film. The romance in the film is unbelievable and they show no emotion.

The theme of the story is that love will conquer everything including income and class. This shows in the story as even though Andie is poor that she still gets with the rich kid. The theme is timeless despite the film’s flaws.

The film is bland, boring, and awful. There are so many things wrong with this film even Hughes thought it was bad. The relationships are bad, the comedy falls flat and it is just bad. I give “Pretty in Pink,’ 1 dancing Jon Cryer out of 5.
